If a person was not ready to sacrifice herself, the Church took charge. Terrible was the repression of minorities of which antiquity had been so tolerant. Unwed mothers were condemned to exile or prostitution. Homosexuals and adulterers were condemned to death. Some women were burnt at the stake as witches, when beauty and charm may have been their only crimes.
